RESERVES ON END OF DEFEAT
Southend United's reserve side were on the end of a 3-1 reverse this afternoon against Luton Town.
Zoltan Liptak scored the Blues only goal of the afternoon with a header from a corner in the second half.
And despite enjoying the majority of possession it was the Blues second string that was on the end of the defeat.
Luton took the lead on the half hour mark through Andre McCollin with a good solo goalgoal as United were left on the back foot.
Fisher Athletic trialist Gavin Tomlin's then put the Blues even further behind after the break as Tomlin capitalised on a Steve Collis mistake to make it 2-0 to Luton after 54 minutes.
That lead was further extended shortly afterwards when a free-kick into the Southend box struck Matt Harrold on the back, and fell nicely for Brett Johnson to add a third.
Southend had chances to win the game though, but could only find the net through Liptak 15 minutes from time after the Hungarian rose highest to head home Johnny Herd's corner.
Reserve Team boss Dean Austin said after the game: "We have played worse and won this year, we had chances and could easily have won 7-3.
"Damian Scannell played 90 minutes and was our best player, he looked really sharp after a lay off."
United's reserve side return to action next Monday with a trip to Stevenage Borough, kick-off 2pm.
Southend: Collis, Grant, Liptak, Obaze, Herd, Revell, Moussa, Lokando, Scannell, Harrold, MacDonald.
