Southend completed the signing of Eastleigh winger Damian Scannell at the beginning of January 2008.

Manager Steve Tilson swooped to land the services of the highly-rated winger for £5,000 from the Blue Square South side.

And having agreed personal terms in December, the opening of the transfer window paved the way for the youngster to sign a two-and-a-half-year deal at Roots Hall.

United have beaten a host of Football League sides to sign the Croydon based player; with Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Southampton all believed to have been interested.

Scannell scored seven times in 25 appearances this season for Eastleigh since his free transfer move from Fisher Athletic in the summer.

Scannell made nine appearances as a substitute last season.
