GOALLESS STALEMATE AT CANVEY
Southend were involved in a goalless stalemate at Canvey Island in their second friendly of pre-season.
Chances were few and far between throughout the 90 minutes at Park Lane on Friday night.
Alex Revell was foiled in the early exchanges with an attempted chip blocked by the out-rushing Ricky Wiseman.
Peter Clarke was found unmarked in front of goal, but missed connecting with the ball from Simon Francis' cross.
After the break, Charles Ademeno came off the bench and looked to make a quick impression as he fired a left-foot shot wide of the post
Canvey were lively up front after the interval with Ian Luck even putting the ball into the net, only to find his effort disallowed for a foul.
Luck tested Ian Joyce with a 20 yard free kick, but Southend's new American goalkeeper was equal to the effort.
As the match entered the latter stages Francis flashed another half-chance wide of the target before the Blues created the best opening of the game.
Cutting inside from the right, Revell crossed the ball to the far post for Rhys Henry, but with the goal at his mercy he somehow shot wide.
At the other end, Leon Antonie beat Joyce in the air to win a header, only to see the ball sail narrowly wide of the right-hand post.
Southend: Joyce, Francis, Herd, Stefiano (Ademeno 46), Clarke, Jones (Byrne 64), Lokando, McCormack, Furlong (Henry 67), Fabio (O'Keefe 67), Revell.
