Southend failed to find a victory to cap manager Steve Tilson's 250th game in charge despite Lee Barnard's eighth goal of the season hauling them back to earn a point at home to Northampton.

The Blues did extend their unbeaten run to 12 games, but they were far from their best at Roots Hall in dropping down a place to fifth in League One.

Of course, there is still the comfort of nine points keeping them in the play-offs ahead of the longest of long trips next weekend at Carlisle United.

Southend made a nervous start despite a swift counter forward ending with James Walker flashing an effort wide of the right-hand post.

Northampton's Ryan Gilligan was found inside the box, but his first-time shot was comfortably held by Darryl Flahavan before Adebayo Akinfenwa kept the Blues' stopper further busy with a quick turn and shot outside the box, which was pushed around the post.

From the resulting set piece the Cobblers failed to follow the script and took the lead in the 25th minute.

Gilligan's corner into the middle of the area found Colin Larkin in oceans of space to plant a free header past the outstretched dive of Flahavan.

Southend rallied to response, but were short of anything clear-cut in the third final, with a low shot from Mark Gower rolling into goalkeeper Mark Bunn's hands the only noteworthy mention.

Instead, as half time approached, only a crucial save from Flahavan kept the score down, with the custodian at full stretch to palm away Alex Dyer's vicious strike.

But the Blues were a reformed side after the break and took just six minutes to get back on level terms.

Charlie Mulgrew rifled a free kick 20 yards out on to the crossbar, but Barnard was on hand to quickly stab in the rebound.

Adam Barrett roamed forward only to be denied a goal to follow his spectacular midweek strike against Brighton, with Bunn making a brilliant reaction save from his point-blank header.

Tommy Black was played through by Alan McCormack, but despite getting a shot on target from the tightest of angles, Daniel Jones was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

The chances continued to be presented in Southend's favour with Nicky Bailey inches wide in meeting Barnard's left-wing with a stooping header before Walker saw a delicate chip cannon off the woodwork.

Bar a Gabor Gyepes header sailing dangerously over from a late free kick, the visitors threatened little after the interval, as the Blues saw more half chances end the wrong side of goal before the final whistle.

Southend: Flahavan, Francis, Clarke, Barrett, Mulgrew, Black (Revell 77), McCormack, Bailey, Gower, Walker, Barnard.

Northampton: Bunn, Crowe, Gyepes, Doig, Larkin (Hubertz 77), Akinfenwa (Henderson 71), Holt, Gilligan, Dolan, Dyer (Jackman 59), Jones.
